Ireland will need an influx of foreign workers to meet the State’s housing targets, the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) has said. Central Statistics Office (CSO)’s data in 2018 shows that there has been a 14% jump in the number of people working in construction but despite this figure, the number of new homes being built remains low, and well shy of the level needed to meet annual demand comparable to Celtic Tiger levels.

To answer for the workforce demand, Irish government recently introduced changes to work permits to let construction workers from countries outside the European Economic Area work in Ireland.
